Floods in the Philippines

Philippines is a tropical country where typhoons are a common occurrence. Mainly, there are two types of climate in the Philippines, these are wet and dry seasons. An ordinary day for the Philippines would be hot and humid. The months of January to June are known to be the dry months where the sun is at its highest while the rest is considered as the wet or rainy season where rains are expected to pour. Because it is a tropical country, typhoons of different proportions frequented the area.

Climate in the Philippines is fairly simple to understand since it has only two and the months they occur are also equally divided between them. Life in the Philippines, even if poverty is an issue that never goes away, is plain, simple and manageable. This is the exact situation when the effects of climate change suddenly hit the country.

Bottled Water vs. Filtered Tap Water

Water is something that every human needs to survive. Everyday in the United States people either purchase water bottles at there near by supermarket or simply just drink out of the tap. However, is bottled water even filtered; is it even regulated by the government?

Bottled water can be glacial water, purified water, and spring water. It is said that even most bottled water companies simply put regular ‘tap water’ in each bottle. Of course doesn’t that mean that bottled water isn’t filtered? The results were startling; it showed that one-third of the bottled water tested high for contamination.

Defining ecological footprint

Ecologists have come up with the term “ecological footprint”.  What does it mean?  Our ecological footprint is the amount of land and water it takes to sustain the way we live here on our planet.  It encompasses the people’s demand on the planet with its ability to regenerate.  Studies have shown that the way we live now, our ecological footprint is 1.3.  Meaning, it takes 1.3 Earths to support our lifestyle.

With the advent of global warming, pollution and other ecological disasters plaguing our planet, scientists, ecologists and environmentalists are scrambling to find a way to make our footprint smaller.  There are a lot of ecological footprint calculators so scientists are finding a way to standardize these tests in order to obtain a more accurate and consistent measuring system.

Environmental Problems in the People’s Republic of China

China is rapidly heading towards its anticipated status of the ‘Economic Tiger’ of the 21st Century. The industrial sector of the country is growing in many different categories of products and so is China’s global trade. Being the world’s most populated nation and the would-be industrial giant, China is facing a number of environmental problems within its boundaries and also with its products meant for import. At the same time, the Chinese government is taking various measures in order to control its environment-related problems and make the quality of life better for its people.

The most immediate and extensive environmental concern in contemporary China is that of water quality. According to China’s Ministry of Water Resources, pollution has affected more than 70% of fresh water bodies (rivers and lakes) in the country and nearly 40% of the water in rivers/streams is unfit for drinking or other kinds of human use. This means that over 300 million rural Chinese people are in need of clean drinking water and many of them have suffered, or are suffering, from water-borne diseases associated with contaminants like arsenic, sodium salts, and/fluorine etc.
