Endangered But Still Eaten By Man

There’s never a shortage of food when it comes to human consumption. In reality, humans can eat anything they want no matter how gross or weird a particular food may be. As they say, it’s only in one’s mind. In the animal kingdom, eating is associated with survival of the fittest especially amongst the carnivore groups. It’s because most of these animals don’t have to be conscious eaters unlike humans who must think before he eats. This must also be the reason why we don’t condemn predator animals when they happen to kill or eat an endangered species. On the other hand, humans are born with both mind and conscience, although some of us choose to ignore it.

Given this power of choice, we should be wise enough to know the consequences of our actions. According to studies conducted by environmental groups, the top three reasons why people choose to eat endangered animals instead of those readily available for them are: tradition, poverty and plain arrogance. Although local authorities are now moving to restrict these unlawful activities, endangered animals are still being consumed at an alarming rate causing them to go further to near-extinction.

How Nonstick Pans Can Kill Birds

To think that nonstick pans garnered popularity due to the fact that it doesn’t need oil to cook, making it a very healthy alternative for cooking, apparently now it poses a greater risk for the environment specifically for our avian friends. For decades now, nonstick pans have been the first choice for every household in America since health conscious individuals developed quite a scare for all things oily. Although our efforts to lead a healthy life have been lovely, it is putting birds at a far greater risk.

Due to the overwhelming demand for such pans, almost every cooking pan manufacturer has their own nonstick type to boast about. True to its name, nonstick pans never failed to deliver the healthy side of cooking, that is if you’re talking about the “lesser oil” aspect of it, never mind the fact that you’re cooking on top of a solid chemical that exudes fumes when overheated and/or upon cooking in it the first time.

Facts about Cigarette Butts

Now you’ll know why you need to quit smoking once and for all. Quitting this deadly habit is not all about you anymore; apparently, it is killing our environment as well and I am not talking about air pollution which is very apparent; this is about harmless looking cigarette butts contaminating our Earth’s marine life and poisoning fishes all over the world.

Obviously, cigarette butts are not biodegradable. Try as one might, it will not break into smaller particles; most likely, they will end up in some hungry fish’s stomach which will gradually kill the poor fish. By the way, one cigarette butt contains numerous hazardous chemicals that can kill its unknowing victim in no time. Even those dubbed as “eco cigarettes” will take time, years and even decades before they’re broken down to smaller particles. Although one small cigarette butt couldn’t very well make a large impact to the environment, consider all those butts smokers flick after each cigarette stick.

Mosquitoes Threatening Animals to Extinction

..and you’d think mosquito-borne diseases are for humans alone? Apparently not, because these blood suckers are driving animals from all over the world to extinction!—something that sends researchers and local government agencies across the globe into frenzy to stop mosquitoes from making further- and ultimately, irreversible- damages.

Earlier this month, it was reported that mosquitoes in the Galapagos Island developed a rare taste for reptilian blood and were sucking off blood from Galápagos tortoises and its close cousins. In this course of action, mosquitoes are passing diseases unknown to a reptilian’s system that could kill them which was exactly what local biologists fear of. Galapagos wildlife is the island’s most notable feature and the very reason why they were declared as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. That alone warrants preventive measures from its local government as they believe mosquitoes breeding in the island are undergoing potentially dangerous mutation stages.

Palm Oil Causes Deforestation

Palm oil is heavily in demand these days and the palm oil industry is certainly booming, ensuring good income for many years to come. Palm oil is a major component to common necessities such as shampoos, soaps and candles. And because palm oil is edible oil, it can also be used in foods like chocolates and margarine making it a very lucrative business to many farmers experiencing difficulties in farming.

Due to these ever increasing demands, huge palm oil plantations are replacing large portions of forests in Asian countries particularly in Malaysia, the leading palm oil exporter in the world. These land conversions are certainly taking their toll to the biodiversity within the area, threatening many animals living in these forests to extinction.
