When it’s Labeled “Biodegradable”

If you are a chronic label reader, chances are you stumbled upon biodegradable signs and logos. Labels are important for conscious consumers because these are their main reference for the things they buy. This is also why some government agencies regulate the usage of logos in labels. It is done to eliminate unsubstantial, misleading and deceptive use of logos in labels. But of course, rules often come with many loopholes which manufacturers never fail to see.

What is Deforestation

Deforestation is something that “we” humans are responsible for, it is the logging of trees in forested areas. Each day, trees are sold as a product are used, cleared used for grazing land by humans. Deforestation is largely unknown and there are no consequences amongst the people damaging the planet in this matter.

It has been known that forests disappear naturally by extensive climate change, fires, hurricanes or any other disturbances that are not caused by people. However, even when these horrible events occur, we never prevent them, nor do we help change what has been done. Environmental Problems in the People’s Republic of China

China is rapidly heading towards its anticipated status of the ‘Economic Tiger’ of the 21st Century. The industrial sector of the country is growing in many different categories of products and so is China’s global trade. Being the world’s most populated nation and the would-be industrial giant, China is facing a number of environmental problems within its boundaries and also with its products meant for import. At the same time, the Chinese government is taking various measures in order to control its environment-related problems and make the quality of life better for its people.

The most immediate and extensive environmental concern in contemporary China is that of water quality. According to China’s Ministry of Water Resources, pollution has affected more than 70% of fresh water bodies (rivers and lakes) in the country and nearly 40% of the water in rivers/streams is unfit for drinking or other kinds of human use. This means that over 300 million rural Chinese people are in need of clean drinking water and many of them have suffered, or are suffering, from water-borne diseases associated with contaminants like arsenic, sodium salts, and/fluorine etc.

A Tree is Born: Indonesia’s Eco-Friendly Plantation Law

Forests are the leading sinks for carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas that is responsible for much of the global warming problem that we face today. Prevention of deforestation has, therefore, topped the objectives of many green projects. Legislations have been passed against deforestation in many places. But few governments have attempted to formulate laws, and enforce them, regarding active plantation. Now we have an exciting example from Indonesia where plantation has been made a part of family law.

Balikpapan is a seaport city in the East Kalimantan province of Indonesia. The well-known mining and timber industries in the areas around the city have been the cause of deforestation that has now reached an alarming limit and raised the concern of environmental authorities. To tackle the problem, the government has taken a novel measure for replacing the lost vegetation. A new environmental law has been approved that requires families to plant a tree each time there is a marriage or birth in the family.
