Eco Friendly Cars

Are you familiar with the Toyota Prius?  How about the Tesla Roadster?  These automobiles are known around the world because they are friendly and green alternatives to the cars running around our cities today.

The concept of an electric car is not a new one.  When Henry Ford first ventured into automobile making one of his earlier models was a steam powered automobile.  Porsche even had an electric car in the early 1900’s that won the Exelberg Rally in 1901.

Eco friendly cars use electricity; green fuel like ethanol, e-85 and biodiesel; solar power; hybrid motors (rechargeable battery + conventional gasoline engine) and even natural gas to power itself.

We all know that one of the causes of global warming is the alarming number of cars that run in our cities.  In the United States alone there is approximately 2 cars to every household.  This contributes to more pollution, more green house gases which in turn leads to global warming.

With eco friendly cars such as the hybrid, consumers can save on fuel or gasoline because the car uses its rechargeable battery to run.  When the batteries run out, it then automatically turns on the gas engine so that the batteries can recharge itself.  This is much more earth friendly than relying on gasoline alone to power your vehicle.

The Tesla Roadster on the other hand is the world’s first all electric sports car.  It runs on pure electricity.  It has a rechargeable battery that you can plug to a power supply when it runs out.  The Tesla’s lithium-ion battery can travel 244 miles or 393 kilometers on a single full charge.

Hybrid electric cars and even electric cars are still expensive in some countries.  As technology advances you can be sure that a future without fossil fueled car is a distinct possibility.

Eco Consciousness Starts From Home

I firmly believe that our ethics was heavily molded in our childhood years. These were the years when we have no idea how to act in this crazy, heavily-laden with issues world so we just took after our supposedly role models i.e adults around us. It’s funny how hard we deny our caregivers’ characteristics—even despise at times—and yet be able to carry them to our own adulthood. It’s because these characteristics are deeply embedded in our own subconscious minds that if reflex has it, it will certainly come out unabashed.

It was also said that the earliest you can train your child of certain things, the better he or she will absorb the things you want them to perceive. This may be true and with this I also hope the next generation to be more eco conscious than the generation we are living right now since together with us, our kids are the ones experiencing the many diverse effects of climate change, global warming and other eco-related issues.

It is very important for us parents to start encouraging our kids to be more conscious of our environment. Who else would teach them anyway? Of course, if you want them to accept the practice better, you might want to change your ways for the better too. Learning with them is a great way to ensure bond and save the environment at the same time. Help them see the importance of educating one’s self and how they can help the environment in their own little ways by providing them with all the materials they need such as reading materials and short field trips around your area.

Endangered But Still Eaten By Man

There’s never a shortage of food when it comes to human consumption. In reality, humans can eat anything they want no matter how gross or weird a particular food may be. As they say, it’s only in one’s mind. In the animal kingdom, eating is associated with survival of the fittest especially amongst the carnivore groups. It’s because most of these animals don’t have to be conscious eaters unlike humans who must think before he eats. This must also be the reason why we don’t condemn predator animals when they happen to kill or eat an endangered species. On the other hand, humans are born with both mind and conscience, although some of us choose to ignore it.

Given this power of choice, we should be wise enough to know the consequences of our actions. According to studies conducted by environmental groups, the top three reasons why people choose to eat endangered animals instead of those readily available for them are: tradition, poverty and plain arrogance. Although local authorities are now moving to restrict these unlawful activities, endangered animals are still being consumed at an alarming rate causing them to go further to near-extinction.

Here are some endangered animals that are unnecessarily slaughtered for food:
·    Bluefin Tuna
·    African Elephants
·    Sea Turtles
·    Sharks
·    Eels

Floods in the Philippines

Philippines is a tropical country where typhoons are a common occurrence. Mainly, there are two types of climate in the Philippines, these are wet and dry seasons. An ordinary day for the Philippines would be hot and humid. The months of January to June are known to be the dry months where the sun is at its highest while the rest is considered as the wet or rainy season where rains are expected to pour. Because it is a tropical country, typhoons of different proportions frequented the area.

Climate in the Philippines is fairly simple to understand since it has only two and the months they occur are also equally divided between them. Life in the Philippines, even if poverty is an issue that never goes away, is plain, simple and manageable. This is the exact situation when the effects of climate change suddenly hit the country.

As if caught completely by surprise, people living in the Philippines were unprepared. Even its government was unprepared for this kind of situation. Manila, being its capital, was the hardest to be hit by the raging downpour of the rain—and for very obvious reasons. Unfortunately, with its messed-up waste management, clogged sewage system, seldom-checked dam sites, unorganized evacuation plan and ever expanding grading or leveling of lands, there’s nothing much to be expected but floods and hundreds of death nationwide.

Obviously, the flood that had kept the nation in total freeze is a direct effect of climate change and more of these are to be expected. People of the Philippines are hoping that even if the climate cannot be remedied anytime soon, maybe, just maybe, there will be environmental awareness after the tragedy.

Drought Effects in California

For the last three years, several counties in California have been putting up with the tremendous effects of drought and farmers are in the verge of giving up altogether. In fall of 2006, there was a noted below average amount of rain or precipitation in the area according to authorities, but they were far from dreaming that a drought like that would last this long and it seems that the drought is far from over.

At first it was only the farmers who worried about their irrigation system and water supply for their crops. All hopes were gone when the drought brought about continuing water shortage, enough to alert even California’s locals to fear for the day when there would be no more water to drink and sustain human existence. Of course, the hardest hit must be endured by California farmers whose main source of income is largely dependent on water. Indeed, local economies are hurt by drought and the situation is expected to worsen if the climate won’t change even for a bit. Agriculture-based businesses are now cutting back on manpower, if not shutting down, causing the employment rate to decrease dramatically in drought-stricken areas.

Many believed that the drought in California was brought about by global warming. In other words, it is not caused by nature per se but one that is man-made—a reaction of nature to man’s irresponsible ways. Weather experts also predicted that if worse comes to worst, there will be a huge downpour soon after the drought, but this is one that’s not to be desired since it will be worse than anyone could ever endure.
