Man has abused nature’s bounty for centuries and we are now only paying for these sins. Not only is our environment changing but our climate as well. Man’s destructive behavior has not only affected his existence but the lives of the animals, plants and other species with whom we share this planet with.
Animals which are labeled as endangered are those whose numbers are threatened by extinction. This means that these species have low reproductive rates and their mortality rates are also dropping. One of the most common reasons why this is so is because of men who encroach on their habitat. In a way, our existence in this planet is displacing animals and threatening their natural habitat.
One of the most famous endangered animals is the African elephant. These mammals are the earth’s largest land animal and their numbers have dropped significantly over the last years.
Another famous endangered animal is the American Bald Eagle. The eagle is the symbol of the United States of America since 1782 and has recently recovered from extinction. However, it still remains as a protected species. The Bald Eagle is native to Northern America. Bald Eagles live near rivers and lakes and its favorite food is fish.
China’s giant panda is another animal gaining a lot of public attention due to its near extinction classification. There are only around 700 pandas left in the world! It lives in the coniferous forests of China and eats bamboo. Breeding and other conservation projects have had some success but the panda is still on the endangered list.
The Komodo Dragon of Indonesia is the world’s largest lizard and is well on its way to being endangered. It lives in one of the tiny islands in Indonesia. Poaching and human encroaching has had a great impact on the lizard’s numbers even though the female can lay up to 20 eggs per mating season and live up to 25 years.
These are just a few examples on how man has affected the other animals in this planet. However having these animals on the endangered list does not mean that all hope is lost. Environmentalists and animal activists are all joining hands and doing all that they can in order to help save the other creatures which live on our planet.
We can also help save these animals by promoting lifestyles which lessen our impact on our society like helping preserve and conserve our natural resources. We can also help support animal conservation projects. Always remember that a little help goes a long way.
