Australian Great Barrier Reef- Why it’s not growing much these days

Have you ever marvel on the beauty of the underwater lately? The amusing school of fishes that flocks in one corner of the sea, the beauty of the corals that colors the underworld, and the crystal blue water that blends perfectly with the thousand marine creatures that swims past the vast part of the ocean.

Well, if you could picture anything right now, it must be the Australian Great Barrier Reef. Included in one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world. It is so large that it can be seen from the outer space and it is the world’s biggest single structure composed of and built by billion of tiny organisms called coral polyps.

However, despite the many acclaims that this world heritage site is receiving, the Great Barrier Reef is still facing as much threats. The dominant threat to it is the climate change and next to it is the coral bleaching events. The inconsistent ocean temperature are pushing the marine animals to find another habitat thus leaving as other animals in peril.
In addition, the ecosystem is also deteriorating because of the pollution and declining water quality. Accordingly, the rivers of northeastern Australia provide significant pollution of the Reef during tropical flood events with over 90% of this pollution being sourced from farms.
These eco green issues should be addressed by implementing some eco green projects that could help salvage the ailing barrier reef.  More than its beauty and physical appearance, coral reefs present there contain some medicinal compounds that could be a source for drug content.
The pollution and every threat that the Australian Great Barrier Reef is experiencing hinders the growth of these reefs. With this, and other detrimental effects to our ecosystem once we let the Great Barrier Reef fall into shambles, we should be alarmed and pool all our resources to reclaim the ecosystem and combat all the eco issues that comes with it.
