Ecotourism in Costa Rica



Ecotourism is simply a tour of a country’s ecological attractions.  It focuses on environmental issues rather than the actual tourist spot itself.  It also centers on preserving the natural beauty, cultural heritage and the flora and fauna that live there.

Costa Rica is a South American country with diverse ecological wonders.  It is the most visited South American country with more than 1.9 million tourists a year.  Ecotourism is extremely popular in Costa Rica.  It has many protected areas and national parks.  It has varied plants and animals and with 25% of its total land area protected and reserved, expect to see a lot of wildlife.

The Corcovado National Park is a popular ecotourism destination in the country.  Located at the Osa Penninsula south west of Costa Rica, it is part of the Osa Conservation Area established in 1975.  Corcovado National Park is home to endangerd animals like the Harpy Eagle, Jaguar and the Central American Squirrel Monkey.  Other animals that you can see at Corcovado include: pumas, American corocodiles, ocelots, poison dart frogs and a host of other exotic animals.

Mangrove, alluvial, montane forests are also some of the vegetation types that can be found at Corcovado which holds more than 500 tree species like the cow tree and the crabwood tree.

Tortuguero National Park is where you want to go if you want to see the famous but endangered green turtles.  This ecotourist spot is the nesting place of the species.

Other notable ecotourism destinations in Costa Rica are the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve which his home to over 2,000 plant species and 400 types of birds.
