Started in 1991, the Philippine government came up with Ecotourism or Ecological tourism in an attempt to improve and develop lives of local people while promoting tourism as well.
With a 20-year plan, ecotourism projects focused on preservation of natural and cultural Philippine heritage, advancement of local communities around the area and satisfaction of travelers alike. Together with various departments and NGOs, they perceive this project to continually benefit government by providing income and a way to protect the environment.
Protected areas are declared and kept in close watch from human exploitations. Natural areas should stay in their pure form to maintain biodiversity. Tourist Zones are for visiting travelers with assistance of locals in the area to avoid unseen harm. Ecotourism services are offered for tourism-related activities like transportation, food and guides. Because of these new terms, it gave birth to ecotourism language that will be understood throughout Philippines.
Activities, still with observance of ecotourism include trekking mountains, snorkeling, caving, kayaking and surfing in well-preserved areas. Some are made tourist-friendly for the purposes of ecotourism.
Although this project was not welcomed warmly by some groups in the Philippines for different reasons and some unknown, there are still people who believe that this project could work in the long run.
Ecotourism might be the only way we could make the Ecology last for many generations more.
